Commercial & Industrial Noise Surveys
Assessing the noise your plant, machinery or premises makes — and its impact on neighbours. BS 4142 rating assessments for planning, permits and complaint resolution.
A commercial and industrial noise survey assesses noise from sources such as plant, machinery, extract systems, factories and commercial premises, and rates its impact on nearby noise-sensitive properties. The standard methodology is BS 4142, which compares the rating level of the specific source against the background sound level.
These surveys are required for planning applications involving new or expanded commercial and industrial operations, to support environmental permits, and to resolve noise complaints between businesses and residents.
Rate the source, assess the impact.
Source & background measurement
We measure the specific noise from the plant or operation and the prevailing background level at the nearest sensitive receptors.
BS 4142 rating assessment
Acoustic features such as tonality and impulsivity are accounted for, and the rating level is compared to background to gauge likely impact.
Mitigation & reporting
Where impact is significant, we recommend controls — enclosures, attenuators, screening or relocation — and report for planning or permitting.
When you need one
- You’re applying for planning for a new or expanded commercial or industrial operation.
- New plant, machinery or extract equipment will operate near homes.
- A noise complaint or environmental permit requires a BS 4142 assessment.
One accredited team, start to finish.
Defensible assessments
Robust BS 4142 work that stands up to scrutiny from environmental health and at appeal.
Cost-aware controls
Where mitigation is needed, we focus on the controls that deliver the most reduction per pound.
Dispute resolution
Objective measurement that helps resolve noise complaints between operators and neighbours.
Experienced consultants
Assessments by consultants who understand both the acoustics and what regulators expect to see.
Commercial & Industrial Noise Surveys — your questions
What is a BS 4142 assessment?
BS 4142 is the British Standard method for rating and assessing sound of an industrial or commercial nature affecting residential premises. It compares the “rating level” of the specific source — adjusted for features like tone and impulsivity — against the background sound level to indicate the likely impact.
When does background noise need to be measured?
The background sound level is central to a BS 4142 assessment, so it’s measured at representative times and locations near the affected properties — often including quieter night-time periods when plant may still be running.
Can you assess noise from a single item of plant?
Yes. Whether it’s a condenser unit, extract fan, chiller or a whole process, we can measure or predict the source level and assess its rating impact on the nearest sensitive receptors.
What if my assessment shows an adverse impact?
We identify practical mitigation — acoustic enclosures, attenuators, screening, anti-vibration mounts or operational restrictions — and quantify the reduction so you can demonstrate an acceptable impact.
