Part O – Important Factors to Consider

Key considerations for applying Approved Document O (overheating) — when the Simplified Method falls short and a CIBSE TM59 Dynamic Thermal Model is required.

Part O – Important Factors to Consider

With the industry now finally getting to grips with the 2022 introduction of Approved Document O Overheating, a number of important considerations have emerged for its application.

Whilst the first port of call is often the Simplified Method, this may not be appropriate if any of the factors below are applicable.

These factors all place restrictions on the openability of windows, something that the Simplified Method approach relies on. Therefore, a more detailed CIBSE TM59 Dynamic Thermal Modelling is usually required to demonstrate compliance. This approach can factor in an array of mitigations to make up for the loss of natural ventilation.
